As the Maryland sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a golden glow over the field, the unmistakable signals of high school lacrosse season’s return were in full effect. But this wasn’t just any ordinary early-season matchup—this was a clash of titans, a showdown between two of the premier programs in the nation. On one side, Archbishop Spalding, led by five-star defenseman Robby Hopper. On the other, St. John’s College, anchored by another elite five-star talent, Jayden James. These two stalwart poles weren’t just set to showcase their defensive prowess, but they were also sporting our newly released Echo Elbow Pads—engineered for players of their caliber. This game marked the first time both would put them to the test under live conditions.
From the opening whistle, it was evident that both squads trusted their star defenders to initiate transition. Hopper and James wasted no time in pushing the ball up the field whenever an opportunity arose. The first quarter, however, was a slow burn—both teams feeling each other out, resulting in a methodical pace and a low-scoring affair. Given that this was the first scrimmage of the season, the cautious start was hardly surprising.
As the game settled into the second quarter, the intensity ramped up. Both teams traded offensive and defensive blows, showcasing flashes of the elite talent that has made them perennial contenders. By halftime, Hopper had tallied an assist—though he easily could have had three—while also forcing two turnovers. James countered with an impressive four single-man clears and a pair of caused turnovers of his own. Unfortunately, as is often the case in scrimmages, the second half saw a limited role for the starting defenders, allowing the backups to take the stage. St. John’s ultimately emerged victorious, netting a handful of late goals to edge out a 13-12 win—an unexpected scoreline, but one that underscores the unpredictable nature of early-season competition.
Following the game, I had the opportunity to catch up with both players. James was upbeat about his team’s performance and the season ahead. “That first half, we looked good out there. We were getting goals and only gave up four. All fixable mistakes, so we should be in great shape moving forward,” he remarked. He was equally enthusiastic about his new elbow pads, adding, “I barely even notice them. They feel like an extension of my shirt.”
Hopper echoed similar sentiments about his squad’s potential. “I feel pretty good. We’ve got a solid group of guys. Just need to clean up the little things,” he noted with confidence. And when it came to his thoughts on the new Echo Elbow Pads, he didn’t hold back. “These are it. This is the new wave.”
With both teams boasting talent at every level, this scrimmage was merely a prelude to what promises to be an electrifying season. If Hopper and James’ performances were any indication, Maryland and D.C. high school lacrosse fans are in for a treat. The weather may have been warm, but the competition is only heating up.
